Local Resident Named to Post Mrs Pat Goodman has been nam ed chairm an of the Breath of Life C am paign to fight ch ild ren's lung d isea ses, according to D on S c h o lla n d e r , H on orary Chairman of the Oregon Chap ter, N ational C ystic F ibrosis R esearch Foundation Mrs Goodman will lead local volunteers in raising funds to support research and ca re pro gram s for children affected by lu n g -d a m a g in g d is e a s e s lik e cy stic fibrosis, sev ere asthm a, chronic bronchitis, bronchiecta sis. and a condition called "childhood em p h y sem a ." Child ren in Oregon and Southw est Washington are diagnosed and followed at the C-F Center. U niversity of Oregon M edical School A house - to - house appeal in Vernonia is scheduled for S ep t em ber 10 through the 16. Cystic fibrosis, an incurable gentic d isea se, is inherited when both parents carry the recessiv e gene for C-F It is believed that one in tw enty persons or 10 m illion A m ericans m ay carry the C - F gene, usually without knowing it. Current research funded by the National Cystic Fibrosis R esearch Foundation is seeking a practical test to iden tify these carriers B ecau se of im proved therapy and constant research, m any C-F patients a re living beyond infancy to their teens and into young adulthood That sa m e kind of therapy is relievin g and often curing children suffering from the other respiratory a ff lictions w hose sym p tom s re sem b le those of C-F. “ Most people don't realize that there are six million children in the U.S. affected by pulm onary illn ess,” said Mrs Goodman. “For som e of these children, breathing is not the natural function w e, who are lucky, take for granted ” The Breath of Life Campaign supports not only research, but over 100 C-F Centers for diag nosis and treatm ent across the country By Woodrow Moe QUESTION: I am 19 y ea rs old and receiv e social secu rity check s because I go to co lleg e This su m m er I plan to work and will probably earn about $1,000. He does plan to have this project com pleted this sum m er. An am ended resolution adopt ing the 1973-74 budget w as signed bv the board, a s a result of co m m unication received from the D epartm ent of R evenue a d v is ing that the G eneral Fund bud get m ust be adopted ca teg o ri ca lly rather than in total. Keith Thom pson p resen t ed a recom m endation a s to pro ced u re to be follow ed After con sid erab le discu ssion it w as concluded that: (1) Quick would be allow ed to rem ove w hatever piling is n eces sary and snub and repair those not pulled and used to tie to docks. (2) Quick would be allow ed to construct and install a dock of com p arab le quality to that r e cently installed, part of which is in the river d irectly in front of the county right of w ay and to attach to the other dock tern porarily. (3) Quick would continue to allow cars and or trucks with boat trailers to use the turn around on his property at no cost (4) Dirt on the county right of w ay d oes not h ave to be m oved at this tim e. T h ese provisions w ere based upon the board’s determ ination at a later d ate as to p ossible installation of an additional ram p, at which tim e th ese provisions m ay be change- ed. Phil D ew ey, county surveyor, presented a plot of Hudson C em etery for upproval by the board He ad vised that the W ash ington County su rveyor had a p proved the plot plan The plan w as approved by the board D iscussion ensued with regard to costs to be charged to various d ep artm en ts for use of the copy ing m achines in the courthouse It w as concluded that other governm ental ag en cies, such a« E xtension O ffices, Soil & Water C onservation, CCOG, would be charged 7 cen ts per copy and that em p loyees could use the m ach in es for personal copies at a ch arge of 10 cen ts per copy. It w as also noted that billings to the E xtension O ffice and the Soil and W ater C onservation office would be reduced to five cen ts per copy for copies m ade prior to July 1, 1973 and that a letter be directed to th ese departm ents advising of the costs Sitting a s the Dog Control Board the claim subm itted by Mrs W illiam W iley, for $20 for 4 hens w as denied, a s there being no proof of killing or affidavit of w itn ess to the killing A conform ed copy of the appli cation for BOR funding for C lat skanie City Park w as received from the S tate H ighway D iv i sion.
